Princess Mandalika / Nyale Legend of Lombok Island

    Once upon a time, there lived a princess, named princess Mandalika. She lived in Tanjung Beru kingdom. She was a very beautiful, kind, and smart princess.

        

        Because of her beauty, brain and kindness, many kings, and princes Proposed to her to be their wife. But she didn't have any choice. So she made an archer competition. The winner would be her husband.

   

       When the competition is over, Princess Mandalika doesn't want to marry the winner. So the kings, and princes got mad. And they would destroy her kingdom.

       Princess Mandalika was scared, and ran to top of the hill and shouted,"I'll sacrifice my for my people". After saying that, she committed suicide by throwing her self to the sea.

      Meanwhile, she became a worm and later on, the worm was called NYALE.

This is a legend from Lombok Island. During the month of February people are celebrating and having a search for the Nyale or sea worm. This worm has many colors. Not just the people in Lombok but also other people from different Islands come to their place to join their celebration.
